HOME > CITY GUIDE > MURADIYE COMPLEX
The last complex built in Bursa by Ottoman Sultans, the Muradiye Complex is one of the most serene spots in the city with its historic structure rising under the shade of sprawling plane trees. Commissioned by Sultan Murad II between 1425 and 1426, the complex functions almost like an Ottoman open-air museum, featuring a mosque, madrasa, bathhouse, soup kitchen (imaret), and 12 royal tombs within its grounds.
Located at the heart of the complex, the mosque is one of the most elegant examples of Early Ottoman architecture. The adjacent madrasa is currently used as the Museum of Handicrafts, hosting rare works of traditional tile and calligraphy arts.
Hosting the largest collection of Ottoman royal family members buried together outside Istanbul, this site contains 12 tombs, including those of Sultan Murad II, Şehzade Mustafa, Şehzade Cem, and Hüma Hatun (mother of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror). The tile decorations and dome hand-painted artwork inside the tombs present a visual feast.
Surroundings & Cafes: Boutique cafes are available in the garden and directly across the complex, offering a historic atmosphere for a tea/coffee break.
Traditional Flavors: At the historic Tarihi Muradiye Çorbacısı and local restaurants near the complex, you can experience dishes from Ottoman cuisine.
Visit the Tomb of Şehzade Mustafa: Be sure to see the tomb of Şehzade Mustafa, son of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, adorned with mesmerizing tiles.
Tea Break Under the Plane Trees: Rest under the historic plane trees in the complex garden and soak in the texture of Bursa.
Tarihi Muradiye Çorbacısı: Taste traditional Ottoman soups at the historic venue located right across from the complex.
Best Time for Photos: Morning hours, when sunlight hits the tomb tiles, offer wonderful photo opportunities.
Quietness and Respect: As the tomb area is an active visitation site, planning a calm and quiet visit is recommended.
