HOME > CITY GUIDE > GREEN MOSQUE AND GREEN TOMB
Leaving their mark on the skyline of Bursa, the Green Mosque and Green Tomb are the most magnificent symbols of the Ottoman Empire’s exit from the Interregnum (Fetret Devri) and its rebirth. Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed I (Çelebi Sultan Mehmed) between 1419 and 1421, this complex is one of the most essential stops of Bursa trips with its unique tile craftsmanship, fascinating marble carvings, and hilltop location overlooking the city.
It is the symbol of Bursa with its octagonal architecture visible from almost anywhere in the city and its turquoise/green tiles. The tomb houses the sarcophagi of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and his children. The tiles covering its exterior and interior facades represent the peak reached by tile art in the Early Ottoman period.
It is the most advanced example of inverted T-plan mosque architecture. It is an architectural masterpiece with the marble craftsmanship at the entrance, the indoor fountain (şadırvan), and especially the mesmerizing tile-covered Sultan’s Loggia (Hünkar Mahfili) located on the upper floor. It is one of the rare structures where tiles are used so densely and masterfully in mosque architecture.
In the historic streets surrounding the tomb and mosque, there are boutique shops selling traditional Bursa silk, tile souvenirs, and handcrafted products. You can enjoy a pleasant shopping walk while taking in the historic atmosphere.
Local Flavors: Historic restaurants offering Bursa kebab, cantık (local meat pie), and meatballs are located around the complex.
Scenic Tea Gardens: Right behind the tomb, there are venues on the viewing terrace where you can enjoy tea or coffee with a view of Bursa.
Examine the Marble Portal: Be sure to inspect up close the finely detailed marble carving art on the entrance gate (taç kapı) of the Green Mosque.
Take Photos at the Viewing Terrace: Capture panoramic photos of Bursa from the terrace area located behind the Green Tomb.
Buy Bursa Silk: Explore genuine Bursa silk textiles and tile souvenirs in the shops around the complex.
Best Time for Photos: Morning hours or late afternoon sunlight angles best show off the vivid colors of the Green Tomb’s turquoise tiles.
Dress Code: As you will be visiting a active mosque and tomb, wearing attire compliant with place-of-worship visitation rules is recommended.
