HOME > CITY GUIDE > GÖLYAZI VILLAGE (APOLYONT)
Located in the Nilüfer district of Bursa and connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge extending into Lake Uluabat, Gölyazı—known in antiquity as Apollonia ad Rhyndacum—is one of Turkey’s most photogenic villages, with historic houses rising right out of the water. An old Greek fishing village, Gölyazı preserves its protected historical structure. In spring, as lake water levels rise, trees and streets become submerged, earning the village the nickname “Little Venice”. With its pelicans and magical sunsets, Gölyazı offers a fairytale atmosphere.
Located right at the bridge entrance connecting the village to the mainland, this massive tree is named the “Crying Sycamore” because resin/water naturally oozes from its trunk, making it the symbol of the village. You can enjoy Turkish tea under the shade of its massive branches along the lakefront.
Built in the 19th century and converted into a cultural center following successful restoration, St. Panteleimon Church is one of the finest examples of Greek architecture. Strolling through the village’s narrow streets allows you to inspect historical wooden and adobe Greek houses.
An essential Gölyazı experience is a tour of Lake Uluabat aboard colorful small fishing boats. In spring, gliding through flooded forests and fields of blooming water lilies offers an unforgettable experience.
Located on the hill right behind the village, Zambak Tepe houses ancient rock-cut tomb ruins. Offering a bird’s-eye view of the entire Gölyazı peninsula and Lake Uluabat, this hill is one of the most impressive sunset watching spots in Bursa.
Lakefront Fish Restaurants: Waterfront dining spots around Lake Uluabat are famous for serving fresh freshwater fish, particularly carp (sazan) and catfish (yayın).
Breakfast & Gözleme: Numerous local cafes around the Crying Sycamore and village square offer village breakfasts and freshly baked hand-rolled flatbreads (gözleme).
Take a Lake Boat Tour: Board one of the colorful motorized fishing boats to photograph the peninsula and water lilies from the water.
Watch the Sunset at Zambak Tepe: Experience the golden hour and sunset either from the lakefront or up at Zambak Tepe.
Taste Lake Fish or Gözleme: Stop by local lakeside restaurants for famous carp/catfish or enjoy hot hand-rolled gözleme made by local village women.
Mind Weekend Traffic: Gölyazı receives heavy visitor crowds on weekends, especially during spring and summer. For a peaceful visit and easy parking, prefer weekdays or early weekend morning hours.
Insect / Mosquito Repellent: Since it is a lakeside village, carrying mosquito repellent spray with you—especially during summer evenings—will be very helpful.
