HOME > CITY GUIDE > BURSA CITY MUSEUM
Located in the very heart of Bursa right behind the Atatürk Monument, the Bursa City Museum operates inside the historic Government House (Hükümet Konağı) building as Turkey’s first established city museum. Presenting the 7,000-year history, geography, traditional living culture, economy, and architecture of Bursa—a city of civilizations—through rich objects and displays, the museum serves as an essential first stop for visitors wishing to get to know Bursa closely.
Exhibits the historical timeline starting from early settlements in the Bursa region through the Bithynian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. It features busts and information on statesmen, scientists, and artists who grew up in Bursa or left a mark on the city.
Conveys the social and architectural transformations Bursa experienced during the Republican era. Elements such as Bursa’s famous Kılıç Kalkan (sword and shield) dance, Karagöz & Hacivat shadow play traditions, traditional weddings, culinary culture, and social life are presented via costumes and interactive displays.
As the most popular section of the museum, the basement floor features full-scale street reenactments of the old Bursa bazaar. Shops and wax figures of traditional Bursa artisans—such as carpenters, coppersmiths, knifemakers, silk weavers, shoemakers, and towel makers—bring the period’s spirit to life.
Museum Cafe: A pleasant cafe located in the museum courtyard and garden serves tea, coffee, and light snacks.
Nearby Dining: Situated in the historic center and Heykel area, famous Bursa Kebab (İskender) restaurants, pita bakeries, and cafes are just a few steps away.
Take Photos in Artisans’ Street: Capture nostalgic photos in front of the historic Bursa artisan shops and wax figures on the basement level.
Explore the Karagöz & Hacivat Corner: Discover the origins and history of Karagöz and Hacivat, the world-famous shadow play figures rooted in Bursa.
Visit the Silk Weaving Section: Examine Bursa’s world-renowned silk production history and historic weaving looms.
Mind the Monday Closure: The museum is closed on Mondays for maintenance and cleaning; plan your visit accordingly.
Central Location Advantage: After visiting the museum, you can easily continue on a walking route covering the neighboring Historic Governorship Building, Atatürk Monument, Koza Han, and Grand Mosque (Ulucami).
