Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Historical Bazaars & Khans Area is the most vital center keeping Bursa’s rich trading culture alive from the Ottoman era to the present day. Surrounding the Grand Mosque, this massive open-air museum—consisting of dozens of historic structures such as Koza Han, İpek Han, Pirinç Han, and the Covered Bazaar—offers a true journey through time.
Drinking a relaxing coffee under the shade of historic plane trees, exploring the vibrant colors of silk scarves, and hearing the echo of centuries-old shopping sounds will make this one of the most unforgettable stops of your visit to Bursa.
Built in 1491 by Sultan Bayezid II, Koza Han is undoubtedly the most popular and enchanting stop in the Historical Khans Area. The historic small mosque (mescit) and the fountain beneath it, set right in the center of its magnificent two-story architecture, offer visitors a unique relaxing atmosphere under the shade of plane trees.
Dozens of shops on the upper floor sell scarves, shawls, and custom-woven fabrics made from world-famous Bursa silk. It is the ideal spot to feel the historical ambiance, inspect unique silk products, and take a traditional Turkish coffee break.
Constructed in 1508 by Sultan Bayezid II, Pirinç Han is a top choice for youth and travelers with its spacious courtyard. Presenting one of the finest examples of stone and brick craftsmanship, the han carries the trading spirit of the past into the present with its authentic atmosphere.
Together with the nearby Fidan Han, it is one of the liveliest spots to experience the region’s tea and coffee culture. You can sip brewed tea in the shade of centuries-old trees and enjoy Bursa’s charming urban rhythm under the historic arcades.
Starting just north of the Grand Mosque, the Covered Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı) and the connected Long Bazaar (Uzun Çarşı) are the epicenter of trading traditions that have continued uninterrupted since Ottoman times. Preserving their vitality for centuries, these historic streets serve not just as a shopping area, but as a living museum of culture.
Jewelers, famous Bursa towel vendors, cutlery makers, and souvenir shops lining the bazaar offer rich options for visitors. While walking here, you can easily find Bursa’s signature candied chestnuts (kestane şekeri), towels, textile products, and handcrafted souvenirs.
Pleasant tea gardens are available under centuries-old plane trees in the courtyards of Koza Han and Pirinç Han.
Balıbey Han, located on the slope of Tophane, offers a great break stop with traditional handicraft workshops, an authentic cafe, and a scenic view area.
Numerous well-established restaurants serving famous Bursa Cantık, Pideli Köfte, and Iskender Kebab are located throughout the area.
Drink Turkish Coffee in Koza Han Courtyard: Take a coffee break under centuries-old trees next to the historic fountain.
Buy Genuine Bursa Silk: Inspect silk products in the shops on the upper floor of Koza Han.
Taste Bursa Cantık: Experience Bursa’s local minced-meat pita (cantık) at historic bakeries inside the bazaar.
Recommendation: Some shops in the Khans Area may be quieter on Sundays. To experience the shopping and lively atmosphere to the fullest, it is recommended to plan your visit on weekdays or Saturdays.
